On November 14, 1960, six-year-old first-grader Ruby Bridges stepped into the history books when she integrated William Frantz Elementary School. She was not looking to make history. She just wanted to go to school and have the opportunity to learn, and to do so safely. But her courageous action and historic steps initiated the desegregation of New Orleans’ public schools.

Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day started with a group of AAA School Safety Patrollers from Martin Elementary in South San Francisco. Nearly 60 years later, when they heard about Ruby's courage and bravery for the first time, they thought there should be a day to commemorate the movement she started. These students took their idea to the state legislature, and Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day is recognized by the State of California on November 14th of each year.

Now, kids and families across our nation celebrate Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day to honor Ruby's legacy. Join us in walking or rolling to/from school and celebrating equity, diversity and community on our Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day event!

In addition to Walking & Rolling in honor of Ruby this November, let's take the time to thank those who help keep students safe on our travels to/from school! Whether it is our school crossing guard, a staff who monitors drop-off/pick up, a parent who shares the responsibility of driving a carpool to/from school, a school resource officer, or someone else, utilize one of our Walk & Roll Thank You Note templates to compose a letter of appreciation!
